About the artist

Aydan Hüseynli (b. 2002) is an Azeri-Canadian artist. Using the logic of familiar, domestic objects, her work finds resonance between symbolic origins and contemporary simulacra. In collapsing the real and simulated, she opens a third space for viewing the mediation of reality, memory, and heritage within the contemporary Western landscape–where they exist as apparitions rather than fixed origins. In worldbuilding, she slips between dream logic and childhood memory—none left unaffected by a universe of contemporary media. Her work emerges from this dissonance, defining a kind of twenty-first-century magical realism. She received her BFA in Furniture Design from RISD, with a concentration in Theory and History of Art and Design, and the Samuel Gragg Award for Innovation. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY

Her piece, Come Back Home for Christmas, explores the simulacral root of nostalgia in American domestic culture, where it now emanates from the glow of plastic Christmas trees. All the artificial trees come back home every year for Christmas, so she wanted to make hers immortal too.
