About the artist

Nolan Talbot-Kelly (b.1995) designs and makes furniture, lighting and propositional objects in Vancouver B.C. on the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. His practice prioritizes using artefacts and by-products of our hyper-industrialized culture, giving them new life by playfully changing the context within which they are used and experienced. Guided by self imposed limitations, Talbot-Kelly embraces practicality and accessibility. These restrictions drive his process and provide a design approach that operates as a result of preexisting mass production cycles. The two works included by Talbot-Kelly are one of a kind pieces selected from his ongoing series titled Contemporary Waste. Each piece represents the culmination of physical research centred on establishing a design language that challenges our perceptions of waste and everyday materials. The collection celebrates what others have discarded, transforming scraps, off-cuts and found objects into purposeful design.
