About the artist
Young Projects is an architecture and design firm based in New York City. The scale of work spans planning, buildings, interiors, furniture, material prototypes, and objects of curiosity. The work emphasizes making, material sensation, figuration, and spatial complexity: hybrids and ambiguity exist in favor of singularity. The studio explores a variety of methods: breaking traditional techniques for fabrication, hand pulling plaster, growing crystals, and burning things – to name a few. Starting as a LACK Ikea side table, Five Rocks elevates a simple geometry by exploring the old Italian plaster technique scagliola, which is meant to resemble stone. This table exhibits patterns and colors that mimic green marble, but array patterned chunks in unusual, glitchy ways. The pattern also features experiments with imagery/iconography possible through the scagliola technique manifesting as distorted golden swirls/cinnamon rolls sprinkled throughout the green “marble.”
