About the artist

Elizabeth New is a New York City based artist and designer who was born and raised in Philadelphia. She received her Master’s degree in Industrial Design at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn as well as her BFA from Alfred University’s New York State College of Ceramics. Between these degrees she spent formative time developing her visual language at the Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland, Oregon. A longtime member of Clayspace Ceramic Art Center in Brooklyn, Elizabeth is proud to be part of the growing New York City ceramics community. She believes that the job of the artist is to reflect on people and things, react to culture, make worlds, and tell stories. In her work she offers an alternative viewpoint – a glad acceptance of and interest in the muck and mayhem of existence. Her work is often inspired by Occult symbolism, the French Renaissance artist Bernard Palissy, and the uncanniness of the natural world. Her work can currently be found in the Museum of Art and Design store and her solo exhibition “Against Misfortune” is showing at Chinatown Soup Gallery in Manhattan from May 19-25.
