About the artist
Elana Kates (b. 1996) is an artist and designer currently pursuing her MFA in furniture design from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her work is characterized by what she likes to call “the art of lacking in discipline.” She considers themes of revivalism, architecture, and the act of collecting in her practice. Personal Interpretation of a Neon Light reimagines a medium typically associated with commercial signage (and for some, conceptual art of the sixties). Rather than the sensational idiom of advertisement, this work favors something altogether more tepid: the language of office furniture and corporate design. Neon lighting is gratifying to the senses, which is why it’s a favored communications tool. Conventional office décor on the other hand, is aggressively neutral and un-sexy. Together, these vernaculars are at odds, but they still mix. The result is an adulterated kind of corporate aesthetic that I like to call, “my style”.
