About the artist

Elena Mahno is a ceramicist who merges her background in visual arts, science, and design with her preferred medium, clay. Her practice spans sculptural objects, relief work, and artful lighting. Sweeping lines, biomorphism and expressive feminine silhouettes are hallmarks of each piece she makes by hand – they avoid distinct representation, paying tribute to ambiguity and hinting at possibilities. Mahno's work is inspired by the many restarts in her life, embracing non-linear narratives and weaving cultural symbols from her past into a contemporary context. Themes of transformation and womanhood guide her practice. Exhibiting in North America and Europe, she’s presented work at Galerie Joseph (Paris, FR; 2022), Tappan Collective (Los Angeles, US; 2023, 2024), IDS Toronto-Prototype (Toronto, Canada; 2024) and DesignTO, where she was honored with the People’s Choice Award (Toronto, Canada: 2023, 2024). She holds an MSC with a focus on biomaterials from the University of Toronto (Canada, 2008) and is currently based in Brooklyn, NY.
