About the artist
Brent Owens was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1980 and received a BFA with an emphasis in Sculpture from Winthrop University in 2003. After spending nearly 20 years in New York City, Owens currently lives and works in Stone Ridge, New York.
The influence of his formative years in Western North Carolina and South Carolina continues to shape the work he makes. His interest and approach to handcraft manifests in the use of various clunky visceral gestures developed over the years that he feels communicate the uneasy relationship humans have with the rest of the natural world. He has shown extensively in exhibitions throughout New York and the United States, and Venice, Italy. He was the recipient of the 2023 National Academy Affiliated American Academy in Rome Fellowship.
