About the artist

Maryangela Sanchez Rocca is a designer from Saltillo, Mexico, with a BFA in Product Design from Parsons School for Design (2020) and currently pursuing an MFA in Industrial Design at Cranbrook Academy of Art (2026). Her work addresses the tension between natural and synthetic materials in the industrialized Global South. She focuses on the creative potential of materials born from adversity. Additionally, she researches traditional techniques, food, and biomaterials to challenge oppressive production chains between the Global North and South. The "Redes" lighting series emerged from an intuitive exploration of how produce nets could be transformed. Molded colorful plastic produced an intriguing shade for lighting. The bags were compressed, layered, and sewn into a form inspired by a bag full of fruit, ancient fertility figurines, and Mexican woven plastic shopping bags. The vibrant colors of the bags comment on the waste produced by our artificial hyper-fertility and the unseasonality of our current food production systems that are bursting at the seams.
